We’re counting down the days till spring and it’s not just because we’re looking forward to seeing green shoots on the vines again: Friday 7th and Saturday 8th of October heralds Wines of Elgin’s first ever Chardonnay Colloquium. For those unfamiliar with Latin, “colloquium” simply means a conference or seminar – so if you love this sophisticated varietal, this is for you!
We’re one of 16 chardonnay producers in the area (our 2015 Vineyard Selection Chardonnay received commendation in the International Wine Challenge and was recognised as a ‘Elegant and Classy White’ in the Sommeliers’ Selection) as Elgin’s an exceptional region for growing almost any grape due to its cool climate and diversity of vineyard sites. The valley’s high altitude, proximity to the ocean, cloud cover and diurnal temperatures is a match made in heaven for chardonnay’s noble grape which flourishes under these slow, cool ripening conditions.
Day 1: Friday 7th October
Lothian’s winemaker, Richard Kershaw, one of just over 300 Master of Wines in the world heads up a presentation on the Elgin wine growing region while Jamie Goode, London-based wine writer, lecturer and respected wine judge leads a seminar and tutored tasting featuring top quality international and Elgin Chardonnays at Rockhaven followed by a lavish gala dinner.
