The beauty of country living: Elgin Open Gardens

Looking for an excuse to escape the city and replenish your soul in the quiet splendour of nature, now is the perfect time to plan a trip to the Elgin Valley. Just 45 minutes from Cape Town, the next two weekends are dedicated to sharing the vast and diverse beauty of our area’s natural heritage: during this year’s Elgin Open Gardens, you have an opportunity to visit can enjoy access to a selection of 20 stunning gardens in the Elgin and Bot River districts, ranging from large established country gardens (some over 50 years old), to fledgling ones.

Bordered by the Palmiet River on one side and a tranquil lake on the other, our 3 hectare garden features a rose arbour underplanted with thyme leading to a chamomile lawn, a vertical garden ‘door’, a perennial country; woodland and indigenous gardens as well as vines and an orchard, ideal for gentle walks.

Elgin Open Gardens

Dates: 29 – 30 October and 5 – 6 November 2016

Time: 10am – 5pm

Entry: R20 pp (proceeds go to Siphila Sonke and GAWS charities)

For those who want to stock up and exercise their green fingers, a number of gardens will have plants for sale, including some unusual and exotic species. If you have a creative streak, there are several exhibitions to visit too. Come hungry as there many fine restaurants in the area and most gardens will have delicious country food on offer – we’ll have delicious selection wood-fired pizzas to pair with our cool climate wines and for kids, there’s trampolines, a jungle gym and croquet to keep them entertained.
